SIDO LAUNCHED A PACKAGING CENTER IN SIDO INDUSTRIAL ESTATE AT VINGUNGUTI IN DAR ES SALAAM
There has been a need to establish a facility to bail out SMEs in Tanzania from the problems associated with packaging of their products. Now the long awaited facility has become a reality when the government of Finland through ITC provided packaging machines and equipment to support SIDO to establish a center that will be used by MSMEs to address the challenge of packaging their products. The center was established at SIDO Industrial Estate in Vingunguti Dar es Salaam equipped fully with machines and equipment to be used in either producing packaging products or providing packaging associated services. The said common facilities include Manual Coding Machine, Hand Labeling Machines, Crowning machine, Corking machine, Impulse Heat Sealer, Vacuum sealing machine and many more. The center will be used for training, production and services purposes. The center was launched on 11th October 2016, during which representatives of ITC, Mr. Ashish Shah and Mr. Frederic County said the center will enable MSMEs to learn and use the facilities add value to their products as almost all the required services are available at the center. They also stressed on the importance of quality packaging in attracting customers, silencer seller of the product, help to increase the shelf life of the products, become an instrument of protecting and preserving the products, help in identifying a products, make product appealing to the final consumer and differentiates the products from similar products made by other manufacturers. On the other hand, the Guest of Honor, Engineer Prof. Sylvester Mpanduji insisted on the importance of good packaging of products and pointed out that, in developed countries packaging takes about 60 percent of the cost of a product but in Tanzania it covers only up to 20 percent, which lead to about 65 percent of processed food to be imported from abroad simply because it has good packaging materials that attract consumers while 80% of our fruits and vegetables are facing post harvesting losses. The center will be multifunctional by providing services such as packaging to varieties of products, training on good packaging and branding, designing of label and labeling, supplying of varieties of packaging materials that include laminated pouches of all sizes, glass and plastic jars of all kinds and linking MSMEs with big manufacturers of packaging materials.
