Youth employment situation remains one of the key challenges in Tanga and Tanzania in general. Unemployment rate among youth 15 years to 34 years old was 13.7 per cent in 2014. Various NGOs and organizations have been established in order to support the reduction of youth unemployment rate. SEEDO is among the nonprofit youth organization established in Tanga to support youth to create employment. Knowing the activities performed by SIDO especially on providing various training to MSMEs, SEEDO approached SIDO Tanga with the request to train some youth from Mkinga district on food processing technology to enable them add value to the agricultural products they are producing in their areas.
The training was conducted to 31youthgroups from Mkinga District from 6/09/2016 – 01/10/2016. They were trained in processing passion juice, tomato sauce, Chili sauce, Nutritious flour, Garlic Paste, Soy drink and Orange marmalade. All raw materials of the products trained were obtained in the participants locations.
During the closing ceremony, the Chair Person of SEEDO M/s Suzan Stambuli, advised participants to use the skills they acquired effectively so that they can increase their income and improve their life standards accordingly. Moreover, she advised them to utilize other services from SIDO like marketing and loans. On the other hand, participants saw the training as an eye opener that brought an opportunity to fight against poverty by using resources available in their environment.
