DONOR COORDINATION GROUP FOR PRIVATE SECTOR DEVELOPMENT IN TANZANIA VISIT SIDO
The delegation of 8 people from Donor Coordination Group for Private Sector Development in Tanzania recently made a visit to SIDO – Dar es Salaam Industrial Estate. The Group was composed of Mikkel Klim from Embassy of Denmark (Chairperson) and Mr. Nicholas Michael Embassy of Ireland; Mr. Albert Henda of DANIDA (Denmark), Mr. Jared Duitu of CIDA (Canada) and Mr. Love Theodossiady of Sida (Sweden); and Mr. Andrea Autoleiu from UNIDO, Mr. Owais Passay from UN Administration Office in Dar and Rachel Folster from Secretariat of from Private Sector Growth and Trade. Dr. Consolata Ishebabi and Ms Joyce Meru represented Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The aim was to familiarize with programmes, services and activities undertaken by SIDO in promoting and developing SME sector. SIDO Director General Mr. Mike Laiser briefly explained role and functions of SIDO as per Corporate Strategic Plan IV emphasizing on some of the programmes like Incubation Programme, Value Addition Programmes, Skills development Programmes and One District One Product Strategy before visiting some of the industries within the Industrial Estate. They had opportunity to visit 3 entrepreneurs under the Incubation Programme namely Natural Star Product, the manufacturer of soap machines; Simba Brand Food Products, she uses soya in making different products such as milk, soy flour, bread, pastry, soya sausage, Cheese etc; and Power Electronics manufacturers of inventors and Wind Power Generator.
Other enterprises visited include TEMSO Company that deals with engineering products such as making of wood cutting machine, wheelbarrows, galvanized sheet etc; and Southern Company Jumbo which deals with cashew nut processing.
The Group also visited Food Processing and Preservation Training Centre which was built partly with support of UNIDO in 2001 and Agro processing Training cum Production Centre which is under construction with financial support from KOICA
After the visit, the delegation held brief discussions with entrepreneurs in presence of the Ministry and SIDO officials to have clarity on some of the issues observed during the visit. The Group appreciate the exposure to SIDO and to its clients and promised to continue the dialogue on how best to support the SME sector.
